Darren has played the violin for over 40 years, and trained under Gerhardt Dreschler and Ralph Shaw in the North West where he grew up. An experienced and versatile tutor, he teaches mainly classical and folk violin from his home in Owslebury, just outside Winchester. His lessons are structured and focused, but with a relaxed and friendly approach.
A passionate musician, he played and toured in orchestras at home and abroad, at various levels whilst at school and university, including both Chester and Cheshire Youth Orchestras, the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Leeds University Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in string quartets and various ensembles, for theatre productions including ‘Fiddler on the roof’, and is a member of the classical Castle Strings Trio.
Though classically trained, he is also a respected folk musician and has written, performed and recorded with some of the most revered names in folk music.
An important aspect of Darren's teaching is that he encourages good, appropriate posture and technique from early on in his tuition. This enables his students to adopt beneficial habits in order to get the best out of their playing as they progress.
